The Shire of Nithgaard is a group within the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). We are located in central Pennsylvania, and include Centre, Blair, Huntingdon, and parts of Mifflin counties. Our members come from diverse backgrounds and have varied interests, but we all share a common passion. As members of the SCA, we seek to study and recreate pre 17th century Western civilization. We do this by exploring the arts, sciences, traditions, and cultures of the many lands and peoples of pre 1600 Europe. We study dance, calligraphy, martial arts, cooking, metalwork, stained glass, costuming, literature, weaving, heraldry, … and the list continues! Chances are, if it existed before 1600 someone in the SCA does it and would love to help you learn how! But the SCA is not meant to be a simple classroom learning experience. There are no grades, and anyone with an interest can participate. We learn skills in a hands on environment by sharing our research and talents with each other. You may choose to take a class on bodice making, or learn the art of fencing, or perhaps you enjoy the thrill of trying exotic foods… the opportunities are endless. You do not need to be an official member of the SCA to participate in activities, though there are benefits to membership. The only requirement in attending an event is that you make a reasonable attempt at pre-17th century costume. We call this costume garb, but don’t worry!... If you don’t have your own garb, we have a small selection of loaner garb for just this reason. If you are interested in attending an event, or would simply like more information, please visit our Getting Involved page.
